Cleaning your saddle
How to maintain your saddle?
A well-maintained saddle not only ensures optimal comfort for the rider and the horse, but also extends the life of the leather. Here are our tips for maintaining your saddle with Macel Sellier products.
1. Soap: for daily cleaning
Soap is essential for cleaning your saddle after each session. It removes dust, dirt and accumulated perspiration, while preserving the quality of the leather.
- Using a damp sponge, apply the soap to the entire surface of the saddle.
- Clean carefully to remove dirt.
- Use a clean damp sponge to rinse the leather and remove excess product
- Let your saddle dry thoroughly.
2. Balm: to nourish and soften the leather
Blam is essential to maintain the suppleness and beauty of the leather. In addition to nourishing in depth, it offers a light adhesion and adds “grip” to the saddle flaps.
- Make sure your saddle is clean and dry before applying the balm.
- Use the microfiber cloth provided to apply the product evenly.
- Concentrate on the most used areas for an optimal result.
3. Oil: for dry or stiff areas
Oil is used to soften areas that have become stiff or dry, particularly due to the horse’s sweat. This treatment is occasional and reserved for cases where the leather really needs it.
- Apply the oil to a clean, dry saddle, targeting the areas concerned.
- Let the product penetrate before using the saddle again.
💡 Please note: A new saddle leaves our workshops already oiled. It is therefore not necessary to apply oil during the first few weeks of use of the saddle.
Our little extra tips:
Regular maintenance for better longevity
Perform these steps regularly to keep your saddle in perfect condition. Remember that well-maintained leather ensures safety, aesthetics and durability.
Don’t forget to also maintain the less visible parts of your saddle, such as the underside, the gullet or the spaces between the flaps.
What to do if your saddle gets wet?
If your saddle is exposed to rain, it is important to act quickly to preserve the leather and not stain it. As soon as the session is over, carefully clean the saddle with soap to remove any traces of sand or mud thrown up by puddles or traces left by drops. This will prevent marking the leather. As before, remember to rinse the saddle well to avoid leaving soap on the leather. Then let the saddle dry completely in the open air, without its cover. Once dry, nourish the leather with balm or oil, as needed, to restore its suppleness and shine.
💡 Between uses, remember to protect your saddle with its cover to protect it from dust and humidity.
