Use a suitable saddle rack
At Macel Sellier, every saddle we make is unique, designed with care and expertise to guarantee comfort, performance and durability. But to keep your saddle in perfect condition, it’s essential to install and store it correctly.
Poor support can damage your saddle in a number of ways:
- Panels deformation: An unsuitable support can exert excessive pressure and create irreversible dents or hollows.
- Damage to the gutter: Sharp or narrow objects can dent or puncture the gutter.
- Alteration of the tree: If the saddle is placed on a surface that is too wide or unstable, the arch may be deformed.
- Scratches and premature leather wear: Placing your saddle on rough or abrasive surfaces can scratch, mark or stain the leather, reducing its longevity.
Supports to be absolutly avoided
- Narrow or pointed metal bars: These can concentrate excessive pressure on a particular point, pushing the gutter in or deforming it.
- Improvised saddle racks: Although practical at the time, these solutions can seriously damage the internal structure of your saddle.
- Unstable supports: An accidental fall can cause serious damage, both visible and structural.Examples: stall door, locker door, trestle, a barrier that’s too narrow, a chair back or even some “bar” type saddle holders on the market.

The ideal saddle rack
- Wide, rounded support: Choose saddle racks with a wide base that follows the natural shape of the tree and panels, distributing pressure evenly without pressing on the gutter.
- Soft, non-abrasive materials: A saddle rack covered with foam or soft textile will protect leather from scratches and wear (you can also used a saddlepad).
- Stability and safety: Opt for a sturdy support designed to remain stable, even if you place the saddle quickly.
Storage tips
- Protect from humidity and heat: A dry, temperature-stable environment is ideal for preserving the quality of the leather and internal materials.
- Cover your saddle: After each use and for transport, on a dry, clean saddle, protect it with its cover: this will preserved it from dust and accidental scratches. We recommend that you use the cover supplied with your saddle; too small a protection could damage or even bend the flaps.
- Keep an eye on the saddle rack: Even a good saddle rack can wear out over time. Make sure it stays clean, stable and in good condition.
By following these recommendations, combined with good and regular cleaning, you can guarantee your saddle’s long life and optimum performance.
